File Under: Logo Development, Lettering, Typeface Design, Environmental Graphics
Blackbird Pizzeria are vegan pizza and sandwich shops (there are two) here in Philadelphia. They have perfected the dark art of making delicious vegan pizza. Among the punk and vegan communities they enjoy a devoted cult-like following and I've personally been a patron and fan since shortly after their first location opening in 2010. So, when they approached me to work on a re-branding project, I was thrilled. Mark and Ryan, the co-owners, have a really cool outlook on making food and life in general, so I wanted to make sure that came across in the branding. Additionally, they are both devoted, life long members of the DIY punk/vegan community, so the branding had to feel at home in that space as well.
LOGO SKETCH PHASE
Environmental Graphics
To translate the new logo into the new Blackbird Pizzeria location (and old), I worked with sign painter extraordinaire and all around fantastic person, Marissa Cianciulli from Super Signs 215. She painted this outward facing outdoor hanging sign (left) and a large interior north facing wall by the entrance (right).
Blackbird Roman TYPEFACE
The Core Logo I developed for Blackbird is based on two custom typefaces. Blackbird Roman, a serif display font, and Blackbird Script. These two fonts are used interchangeably for things like day-to-day environmental signage and menu updates in addition to the core logo, and variations in between.
